Those aren’t just unfounded negative stereotypes about 80 million Americans born roughly between 1980 and 2000. They’re backed up by a decade of sociological research. The National Institutes of Health found that for people in their 20s, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is three times as high than the generation that’s 65 or older. In 1992, 80 percent of people under 23 wanted to one day have a job with greater responsibility; ten years later, 60 percent did. Millennials received so many participation trophies growing up that 40 percent of them think they should be promoted every two years – regardless of performance. They’re so hopeful about the future you might think they hadn’t heard of something called the Great Recession.”

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the soundscape of my particular sliver of Brooklyn: The streetsweepers start at 1am, then the garbage trucks at 3am, delivery trucks throughout the early hours of the morning, and the jackhammer joins in around 8 or 9am. Firetrucks, ambulances and police cars have no schedule, and scream down the avenue at all hours of the day and night. The jackhammer has been here for two weeks. This corner is not big enough for the both of us. Showdown at noon.

And so, week #2 of jackhammer hell: I didn’t wake up immediately when the jackhammer started. Instead it leaked into my dream. And while I didn’t hear it, I did gripe about it at length to my mother on a train that was circling a large backyard. In the center Parisa was walking my mother’s dog and talking on the telephone. When I woke up I was alone and the sound was deafening.
